France has banned the import of textiles containing PFAS (perfluorinated chemicals) since 2026, and many other EU countries have followed suit. PFAS are commonly used for waterproofing and oil-repellent treatments in outdoor clothing, quick-drying garments, and sun-protective clothing. The new regulations have led to a 15%-25% increase in the cost of transforming functional sportswear exported to Europe. Chinese supply chains are accelerating the development of alternative technologies such as fluorine-free waterproofing, plant-based coatings, and recycled fabrics. Some leading companies have already completed technological upgrades, and their products have obtained EU certification, seizing the initiative in the compliant market. Small and medium-sized sellers are facing a supply chain reshuffle.
